  1.           SORTING THE ELEMENTS ON AN OUTLINE LEVEL

  4.  A. To sort the elements on a particular outline level,
  5.     choose Sort Outline Level from the Outline menu. This
  6.     function allows you to organize elements in much the same
  7.     way as a dictionary organizes words (and all children of an
  8.     element are moved along with their parent).  Choosing this
  9.     function brings up an Option Box with three settings that
  10.     control the sort:

  12.     1. Sort Direction - You can sort elements in either forward or
  13.        reverse order.  If set to "Increasing", this will sort
  14.        elements in the conventional forward order.  If set to
  15.        "Decreasing", this will sort elements in the opposite of the
  16.        forward order.

  18.     2. Type Of Sort - If set to "Dictionary", this will sort in the
  19.        following order from lowest to highest: punctuation,
  20.        numbers, upper and lower case letters without regard for
  21.        case, blanks.  If set to "Pure Ascii", this will sort in the
  22.        following order from lowest to highest: blanks, punctuation,
  23.        numbers, upper case letters, lower case letters.

  25.     3. Field Number To Sort - PC-OUTLINE sorts based on the
  26.        characters following a colon in an element.  In the child of
  27.        this element, "Sample 1" is the 0th field, "b" is the 1st
  28.        Field, "3" is the 2nd field, and "OK" is the 3rd.

  34.  B. Move the cursor to the children of these elements and try
  35.     several sorts for yourself. Try different settings of Sort
  36.     Direction, Type of Sort, and Field Number.  Watch how the
  37.     order of the elements change - keeping track of their
  38.     original positions is easy with the words "Sample 1",
  39.     "Sample 2", etc.   (Note that if you sort by a Field Number
  40.     higher than the number of fields of any element in the sort
  41.     - 4 or more in this example - then sorting will simply
  42.     reverse the order of the elements. Doing it again will
  43.     simply reverse the order again, back to their original
  44.     places.)
